LifeVantage is a relatively new company. Founded in 2003, LifeVantage Corporation is a publicly traded network marketing company that markets two anti-aging .
Their products are unique to the market.
Protandim, the centerpiece product, is the only product clinically proven to
reduce the effects of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a term used to describe the amount of damage free radicals are creating based upon a blood level of TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances)
It does this by enhancing the production of two enzymes. The scientists on the home page video also state that they have not linked these clinical results to real life effects on aging or reducing disease.
They also market an anti-aging skin crème but there is no clinical evidence that topical application of the Protandim incredients has any effect on the skin. Ironically, this product is calle
d TrueScience.
Here is an interesting quote from some dermatologists; “I believe that LifeVantage TrueScience is a key complementary product to Protandim. The ravages of aging have a variety of causes and battling them at both the cellular and external levels is very important to long term health.” Interestingly, the quote is careful not to state that the product will help with aging skin.
One thing that you should probably keep a close eye on is the recent lawsuit that Zrii filed against LifeVantage. Here is the Press Release:
Zrii, LLC announced today that on February 27, 2009, Zrii, LLC filed a lawsuit against Lifevantage Corporation for allegedly inducing and conspiring with the former Zrii executive management team and some of its leading Independent Executives to breach their contracts with Zrii, to join Lifevantage as its employees or distributors, and to utilize trade secrets of Zrii for the benefit of Lifevantage. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court in the Southern District of California. Zrii is seeking damages in excess of $250 million.
That is a nasty allegation.
2) Market Place and Industry Timing:
You should be aware that the FDA is coming down hard on nutritional product companies and the claims that they make for their products. The company is aware of this and warns it’s distributors about making unsubstantiated claims.
In the section regarding product claims in the Policies and Procedures Manual it states:
No claims, which include personal testimonials, as to therapeutic, curative or beneficial properties of any products offered by LifeVantage may be made except those contained in official LifeVantage materials. In particular, no Independent Distributor may make any claim that LifeVantage products are useful in the cure, treatment, diagnosis, mitigation or prevention of any diseases or signs or symptoms of disease.
Timing:
In hard economic times like these, people are not loyal to product names, they are loyal to prices. The timing for Network Marketing is excellent but that is not the same for all companies and it depends a lot on the products. LifeVantage does have a unique product with unclear long-term benefits. The question is how well can you market this product?
3) Compensation Plan
The do not see a big problem the Life Vantage compensation plan.
LifeVantage does require, however, a significant monthly purchase and or sale of their products. This could lead to Distributors being forced to buy more product than they can sell and use.
If you are planning on having success in LifeVantage, you had better have a good plan to build a huge team. In my experience, these types of MLM’s almost always leave a lot of blood on the battle field and the loss is felt in the new recruit. As with every MLM, the people at the top are benefited while those at the bottom struggle and LifeVantage appears to be very much like most MLM companies.
Every product based MLM, like LifeVantage, will present themselves as a business where you can make a lot of money and turn your Plan B into a Plan A. Those that are at the top are certainly doing quite well.
The company does offer stock options for Distributors that reach the upper levels of the payment plan.
4) The Training Program:
This is where all MLM companies drop the ball. LifeVantage is no exception. The leadership in this company are spitting out the same very out dated MLM tactics from the 80s. Since Network Marketing has become more mainstream, these techniques just don’t work as efficiently. There is a different population out there and the new marketers cannot and will not effectively recruit just from their family and friends. The company is a bit more modern with regard to letting you market your product through social media sites, however.
The other issue with this is that your family and friend list they have you make probably does not contain valuable Network Marketers. So besides trying to sell your services and push your opportunity down their throats, straining your friendships, you also have an uphill battle to teach them to be Marketers.
