And, of course, you can’t forget about all of the people stating that all you have to do is pay for their software system if you wish to be the next big name in IM!
Know this: All of these things count (well, perhaps not the software package, but the other things). You have to be diligent and smart about business and creative if you desire to succeed. Obviously, if you can’t clearly communicate with customers and clients, none of the rest of it will actually matter.
Good communication means more than simply coming up with a terrific sales page. You can hire a highly competent copywriter to do that for you. There is more to effective communication than making a beautiful web site that has a lengthy FAQ. You can get those by employing good web site designers and writers. If you wish to be a good communicator, you must develop interpersonal communication skills, not just straightforward copywriting. So, how do you do that?
1. Reply to each and every email you receive within 24 hours of it arriving in your inbox. We aren’t joking with you. You don’t have to write a lengthy response for each email. All you need to do is compose a short note that says something like “I read your e-mail and will be sending you a detailed answer soon.” Try includuding a snippet of the message the other person has written when you do this. This helps the the other person to distinguish your email from the auto responders that everybody else is using.
2. Avoid letting the phone ring and ring. Try not to telephone calls. When your telephone starts ringing, pick it up by the third ring. Do this even if you truly don’t want to talk to the person making the call. You might be glad to know that there is one exemption to this particular rule. You don’t have to worry about being tied to your telephone aroudn the clock. Instead, just specify certain “business” hours during which you plan on being available to talk on the phone. These hours should be displayed conspicuously on your web site and stated in your voice mail message as well. And, of course, every person who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.
3. Follow up with individuals to be sure that they received your memos, emails, messages, etc. This will tell the person that you genuinely care about keeping in contact with them. You’ll endear yourself even more with the people you work with and who buy your products if you ask them if they have any questions and check to be sure that they understood the points you were trying to make.
